Did You Know?

Blackcurrant, or Ribes Nigrum, is a shrub with edible berries. It is native to Europe and Asia. The berries are high in antioxidant compounds and are particularly rich in vitamin C. Because of concerns of a fungal disease spreading from blackcurrant shrubs to native pine trees, which had no natural immunity, the growth of blackcurrant shrubs was banned in the United States in the early 1900s. However, the ban was lifted in certain states in 2003, and blackcurrant production in the United States is beginning to increase. Although still not well-known in the US, blackcurrant is extremely popular in Europe, where it is consumed as a juice and used as a flavor in food products.
