Blackcurrant seed oil contains beneficial Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids in the optimal ratio of 4:1. The Omega-3 content of blackcurrant seed oil is unusually high for a plant-based material – up to 3% or more. Because of the high level of beneficial Omega-3 fatty acids, blackcurrant seed oil is ideal for supporting the cardiovascular system.*

Blackcurrant seed (Ribes nigrum)
Like other berry fruits, blackcurrant is high in anthocyanins, plant compounds which are potent antioxidants. Research has found that an Omega-3 fatty acid found in blackcurrant (stearidonic acid – a long chain polyunsatured fatty acid (PUFA)) supports a healthy inflammation response through its ability to inhibit the formation of the inflammatory compounds, leukotrienes. Stearidonic acid is a precursor to eicosapentanoic acid (EPA), which is also able to inhibit the 5-lipoxygenase pathway. Intake of the Omega-3 fatty acids is associated with increased heart health and support for healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels already within normal limits.*

Did You Know?

The estimated ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids in the typical Western diet is about 20:1. Experts believe that a ratio of 6:1 or less is necessary for optimal health. The increased intake of omega-6 at the expense of Omega-3 is often attributed to the high level of vegetable fats in the typical American diet. These vegetable oils are very high in omega 6 fatty acids and very low in Omega-3 fatty acids. Corn oil has an Omega-6:3 ratio of 60:1 and safflower oil 77:1.
