Native to the hills of Greece and other countries surrounding the Mediterranean sea, the botantical name Origanum (oregano) is derived from two Greek words, oros (mountain) and ganos (joy), meaning Joy of the Mountains. Oil of oregano from Origanum compactum is derived from steam distillation of leaves and flowers of plants grown in Morocco.
