From the Greek word helia meaning sun, and anthus, flower, the sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is one of the most recognizable flower species, even for non-gardening types. Sunflowers in the bud stage can move their heads to follow the east/west movement of the sun across the sky. After the sun sets, the flower turns its face east during the night, ready to catch the first rays of light from the rising sun in the morning. Once the flower has fully bloomed it freezes, typically facing east, and no longer moves to follow the sun.
